Sclerotherapy is a minimally invasive treatment designed to diminish the appearance of spider veins. These common vein issues not only affect the skin’s appearance but can also cause discomfort, including aching, swelling, or heaviness in the legs. What is Sclerotherapy?
Sclerotherapy is a trusted medical procedure used to treat veins that have become twisted, enlarged, or visible beneath the skin. Spider veins, which appear as fine, web-like lines, and small varicose veins are the most common concerns addressed with this treatment. Left untreated, vein issues can worsen over time, leading to increased discomfort or aesthetic concerns. Sclerotherapy works by closing off the problematic veins, allowing healthier veins to carry blood flow while the treated veins are safely reabsorbed by the body.
How Does Sclerotherapy Work?
During a Sclerotherapy session, a skilled medical professional injects a specialized solution directly into the targeted vein using a very fine needle. This solution irritates the wall of the vein, causing it to collapse and seal shut. Over time, the body naturally processes the treated vein, and it fades away. The procedure will typically last between 30 minutes to an hour, depending on the number of veins being treated.
Patients can expect minimal discomfort, often described as a mild stinging sensation during the injection. After the procedure, light compression is applied to the area to promote healing. Most patients can resume their normal activities right away after treatment, though it is recommended to avoid strenuous exercise for a short period and to wear compression stockings for around two weeks to enhance the effectiveness of the treatment.
Full results commonly appear within 3 to 6 weeks for smaller veins, while larger veins may take longer. Multiple sessions may be needed to achieve the desired results.

Sclerotherapy is ideal for adults who are experiencing spider or small varicose veins and want to improve the appearance of their skin and find relief from the related symptoms. It is important that candidates are in good health, do not have a history of blood clots in the treatment area, and are not pregnant or breastfeeding.
